Recovering a hard deleted email in Exchange 2003

I have a habit of hard deleting my email. I always do this. By hard delete, I mean pressing SHIFT + Del to delete my messages, which nukes the message right out of outlook. This means that if you try to recover the deleted message in outlook, the message isn’t showing.

Fortunately, there is a registry setting which will allow you to get your hard deleted messages back. I used KB246153 to solve this issue.

1. Open up the Registry editor:

2. Click Start, run. Enter Regedt32 and click OK.

3. Navigate to the following entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options

4. Right click the Options folder, click New and then select DWORD Value. Enter the following details:

Value name: DumpsterAlwaysOn
Data type: DWORD
Value data: 1

5. Close the registry editor and reboot.

6. Open Outlook, navigate to the folder where the email was hard deleted.

7. In Outlook, go to the Tools menu, click Recover Deleted Items. Then select the email you wish to recover and restore.

    this is really best tip for me because some time i delete the email after some time i need that email so it is realy good tips for me and other also

    This tip did not work for me.

    WHAT if the exchange 2000 server has the KEEP DELETED EMAIL setting set to 0.

    Can I still recover though I was not able to.

    ALSO how to connect to the non exchange mail box versus normal. I am confused by the wording.

    By default, Exchange server allows us to keep deleted messages for 7 days and deleted accounts for 30 days. If this was set to 0, then I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to recover the deleted email. Follw this article for configuring the deleted item retention period:

    Thanks worked wonderfully.

    User deleted email hard… Created a new profile on my computer logged into their box. The Recover Deleted Items option lit up and was able to get the messages back…. Thanks again.

    Hi, Im currently using ms exchange 2007. Althoiugh i can find mails on my server. Some of those mails does not appear i my inbox (outlook 2003).
    How can i get these mails into my inbox.

    Can’t I recover a ‘hard deleted” e-mail messages from other than MS exchange server (simply from MS outlook, 2003 edition)?.

    Does email messages still reside in the Information Store Database on Exch 2003 after Archiving them from Public Folder Mailboxes? Also what database stores these Archived Messages in Exchange Server 2003? Is this part of SQL?

    Thank you, this really is incredible! It saved a lot of effort that would have been directed at recovering a mailbox that was archived using Microsoft Backup on Windows 2003.

    Also remember that when employees are terminated, you disable their accounts at the designated time regardless of if they are still on site or not. We left a fellows account active because he was not terminated at the right time. Big mistake!
