Visio 2007 Pro - Exchange Server Add-In

Although Exchange Management tools are invaluable for managing, monitoring and administer networks, computers, services, and other system components it does not provide a graphical view of user mailbox details. Administrators have to sift through a tree view to view the members of the Distribution Group in an organizational unit and use embedded data to figure out the details.

Microsoft Management Console (MMC) hosts administrative tools that you can use to administer networks, computers, services, and other system components. Exchange Management Console and Exchange Management Shell are used to administer and configure specific settings for Mailbox servers and create and manage Mailbox objects. The Mailbox server role hosts mailbox databases, which contain users’ mailboxes. If you plan to host user mailboxes or public folders, or both, the Mailbox server role is required.

This Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007 Professional Add-In makes it easy for Exchange administrators to visualize, explore, and communicate complex information. Instead of viewing single user data, administrators can create data-connected Visio diagrams that display data at a glance and dramatically increase productivity. You can diagram a Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 site topology, including sites, servers, and connections for an organization.

Sample Exchange 2007 transport agent - add the name of the group to subject line

In this post the MSExchangeTeam.com guys are demonstrating how to add a group name into the subject line of a message using a Transport Agent.

Many people use rules to automatically sort messages from various distribution lists into folders in order to keep the volume of email traffic in their inbox to a manageable level. This work for the most part - until someone decides to BCC a list. Since the distribution list isn’t visible in the list of recipients, it bypasses all rules and gets dropped in their inbox. This can cause quite a distraction for everyone on that DL because something appeared in their inbox, and it’s not quite apparent why they received that message.

Mailman and Majordomo have had this problem solved for a while now. It’s actually a very simple solution: make sure the name of the mailing list is included in the subject of the email. Then users can set up filters based on words in the subject and they never encounter the problem when someone BCC’s the list.

Exchange 2007 can do the same thing; it just needs a little help from a custom transport agent. I have written a very basic agent to add the name of the DL into the subject. You can use it as a starting point and add your own features.

Information Rights Management (IRM) in Outlook 2007

An interisting post about IRM and Outlook 2007. This is only the first part as soon they release the second part I will be posting the update here.

This post is the first in a multi-part series dedicated to Information Rights Management (IRM) in Outlook 2007. While IRM has been a part of Microsoft Office and Outlook since the 2003 release, we often receive questions regarding the deployment of the system and its practical uses.

To address these questions we will be writing an IRM specific blog series that will cover the following topics:

  • What is IRM in Outlook?
  • What IRM infrastructure do I need?
  • What are IRM Templates and how do I use them?
  • How does Microsoft use IRM?
  • How can I use IRM at my company?
  • The IRM Resource index

A substantial amount of documentation for IRM is available on the Internet. It is, however, often difficult for people to get a good end-to-end overview of how to configure and use IRM in the Office 2007 system. As part of this series, we will be providing a list of resources that we think will help you in further understanding IRM.

How Voice Powers OCS 2007

The first article of a OCS 2007 series about Voice and OCS 2007.

The first part in this series on Microsoft Office Communication Server (OCS) 2007 showed how OCS was built on the strengths of Live Communication Server (LCS) 2005 to deliverenhanced enterprise-class instant messaging (IM) and presence capabilities, as well as advanced media and phone functionality (see the February 2008 issue of TechNet Magazine at technet.microsoft.com/magazine/cc194409). This article continues with a deeper dive into the Voice over IP (VoIP) aspect of the story. I will explain how simple voice calls are made in the OCS system and discuss the technology layer by layer, so each component is added along with the corresponding functionality.

Conferencing in Office Communicator

The Communicator Team has blogged how to use the conference resource in OCS 2007 and there some examples how to start a conference from Outlook Client as well.

Conferencing was a large investment for OCS and OC in the 2007 release. We define conferencing as a conversation having three or more participants in it. This can be IM, Audio, Audio/Video, data (Live Meeting), or any combination of those items. For Communicator, we worked hard to keep the fact that it is a “conference” fairly transparent in our user experience. In this article I will explain how easy it is to take advantage of conferencing assuming that you have a conference supported version of OC/OCS 2007.

Windows Search 4.0 has been released

A new version of Windows Search was released yesterday. This new version has some improvements related to Exchange Server/Outlook. Check this information that came from the Windows Vista Team Blog (http://www.windowsvistablog.com).

Speaking of accessing Microsoft Exchange Server - if your organization selects not to use Microsoft Office Outlook in cached mode, you can set a Group Policy to index Exchange in online mode. Windows Search 4.0 will then index with minimal impact to the server. Our internal testing of this configuration shows significant decrease in the load on the server and the network as compared to Windows Desktop Search 3.01.
