Exchange Calendar Update Tool

As I mentioned in a previous post, Preparing for DST 2007, the change in the dates of both the start and the end of daylight saving time (DST) will impact the Calendar of Outlook/Exchange users.

Microsoft is releasing several patches and update tools. Yesterday they released a new one: Microsoft Exchange Calendar Update Tool. And it comes with a very descriptive KB article: How to address daylight saving time by using the Exchange Calendar Update Tool.

Brief Description
The Exchange Calendar Update Tool enables administrators to update, using the Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft® Office Outlook®, multiple user mailboxes, thereby avoiding the challenges involved with broadly deploying the Outlook Time Zone Data Update Tool to all end-users.

Overview
Before you run the Exchange Calendar Update tool, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 930879, “How to address daylight saving time by using the Exchange Calendar Update Tool,” for complete information about potential effects on your IT environment and user base.

After installing the Windows and Exchange daylight saving time (DST) updates, all old appointments (both recurring and single instance) that occur during the extended DST period will be incorrectly displayed as having moved back one hour. These appointments will need to be updated so that they display correctly in Outlook, Outlook Web Access, and CDO-based applications. The Outlook Time Zone Data Update Tool enables end-users to update their own calendars. (For Outlook 2007 the time zone update feature is built into the application.)

The Exchange Calendar Update Tool enables administrators to avoid the challenges involved with broadly deploying the Outlook tool to all users and ensuring that each user runs the tool correctly.

Paul is blogging a lot about this subject. If you’re concerned about DST changes, be sure to read his blog!

I’ve been doing Microsoft networking stuff for a long time — I’ve been an MCSE since 1999, and worked with NT and LAN Manager before that — and I have NEVER seen such a cluster-f**k as the way M$ has fouled this up. Y2K was smooth as silk compared to this!

I’ve been struggling with this problem since January, and feel far less confident now than then. At this point, I have two XP PCs (with SP931836 and Office 2003 installed) and they are showing two different times for my calendar for the period between 3/11/07 and 4/1/07.

You have ludicrous stuff like this: “Note Do not confuse the Outlook tool installer package that is named TZMove.exe with the actual Outlook tool executable file that is also named TZMove.exe.” (you honestly couldn’t have named the install package differently?)

or, “Note You can read the full text of the Energy Policy Act. To do this, visit the following Web site: ” And, of course, the link doesn’t work.

or: “Outlook and the Outlook tool are not part of the Exchange tool download package. They have to be installed separately. ” I expected that Outlook wouldn’t be included. But… would it have killed you to include a url to the Outlook tool, if it’s essential? Never mind, I have Google.

At this point, it’s beginning to seem rather reasonable to change jobs rather than be responsible for the entire company’s calendars being fouled up for three weeks. Except that, come October, we’ll be RIGHT back in the same situation, won’t we.

I should have gone to backhoe school.

It’s nice to see I am not alone in this mess of time change.
I have so many questions…don’t know where to start.
I read conflicting information about when to install the 926666 update.
    1. Do I run this before or after the calendar update tool for exchange?
    2. I couldn’t get the tool to take the LegacyDN name, but I got it run with the netbios name, seems like it worked, but I just wanted to be sure.
    3. Also, I ran it under the administrator login, and afterwards I read your are not supposed to run it under the administrator.

Any help will be appreciated, I have to do this for lot’s of clients… and running a little behind.

    Thanks

The MS directions are getting updated daily it seems, I ran into big problems with the calendarupdate tool I kept getting the error “HrProcessMailbox:Unable to process mailbox” and “HrProcessInputFile:Error Processing Mailbox”.

I worked with MS support and resolved it. The steps I took are outlined here; http://www.arconi.com/DST_Update.html
