Following the Mobile Operator Guide to MSFP post I wrote recently, there are some new technical documents about Windows Mobile messaging:
- Security Considerations for Windows Mobile Messaging in the Enterprise - This paper discusses potential security risks in the mobile Enterprise, and how the network administrator can help protect the device by setting security policies using Exchange Server. It also describes security considerations on the device, the Exchange server, and the corporate network. This paper also describes how to perform common tasks, such as installing a certificate on a Windows Mobile powered device.
- Deploying Windows Mobile 6 Powered Devices with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 - This paper provides step by step instructions about how to deploy Windows Mobile 6 in an Exchange Server 2007 environment. Additionally, it describes new Enterprise features, network architecture scenarios, best practices, and procedures for implementing a mobile messaging system with Exchange Server 2007 and Windows Mobile powered devices that run Windows Mobile 6.
- Security Model for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6 - This paper describes all security policy settings in Windows Mobile powered devices. It also describes permissions, levels of security, and how policies and roles work together. This paper also describes certificates and security services for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6, and some common scenarios, such as wiping or locking a device.
- Step-by-Step Guide to Deploying Windows Mobile-based Devices with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 - This paper presents essential elements of a mobile messaging system, including system requirements; a summary of deployment procedures; an overview of MSFP; an introduction to direct push technology; a summary of ISA Server 2006 features; and best practices for networking, security, and device management. It also provides guidelines and resources for the deployment of a mobile messaging system, including updating Exchange Server 2003 SP2, setting up Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for mobile access, creating a protected communications environment, setting up an ISA Server 2006 environment, and procedures for setting up and managing mobile

While reading the news at the Pro-Exchange site, I noticed this interesting webcast:
RIM to Windows Mobile Migration (Level 100)
Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:00 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)
Patrick Salmon, Mobility Architect, Enterprise Mobile
Event Overview
Increasing mobile worker productivity is a primary driver for why organizations are re-examining their mobility strategy. The Windows Mobile infrastructure provides greater opportunity for enterprises to drive productivity among their mobile workers with the deployment of line-of-business (LOB) applications providing quick and easy access to information to address their business requirements. Additionally, scalability and lower costs are key factors in considering migrating from Research in Motion (RIM) to a Windows Mobile infrastructure. Windows Mobile can easily scale to support the growth of mobile users within a Microsoft Exchange Server environment without having to acquire, install, manage, and support additional infrastructure components. For a successful RIM to Windows Mobile migration, enterprises need to understand the key factors in managing costs and developing a migration plan designed to optimize productivity.

TechNet Chopsticks is a webcast platform (based on Silverlight) from the MSDN and TechNet teams in Belgium. It has all kinds of technical stuff, provided by Microsoft employees, MVPs, User Groups and content from other events like TechDays.
I selected a couple of interesting videos related with Microsoft Exchange:
- Exchange Server 2007: Move Your Files: The default installation of Exchange Server 2007 puts all files in one location. In this session, Ilse Van Criekinge explains how to move Exchange 2007 database files, log files, message queues, and protocol log files to a new location. This will increase performance and allows for better failover scenarios.
- Integrating Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging and Office Communications Server 2007: This module explains the interaction of OCS 2007 and Exchange 2007 Unified Messaging. It details the environment, dial-plan integration, and steps required to add OCS 2007 to Exchange UM infrastructure. Learn how to: install Exchange 2007 UM, configure Exchange UM, integrate Exchange 2007 and OCS 2007, test UM using OC and access Voicemail Directly from OC.
- TechEd IT Forum 2007 - Speaker Idol Winner: Our very own Ilse Van Criekinge, Pro-Exchange, won the speaker idol contest at TechEd IT Forum 2007. Against very fierce competition and before a jury of some high-profile judges, Ilse gave a super talk on Exchange Autodiscover

I still remember when the Service Pack 2 for Exchange Server 2003 was announced, back in 2005. One of the more exciting features of SP2 was Direct Push e-mail, but the service pack by itself was not enough. Only devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 AND the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) could deliver this new functionality.
I couldn’t help myself feeling a little bit nostalgic with the recent release of Mobile Operator Guide to Windows Mobile 5.0 with MSFP.
Overview
This paper discusses MSFP for windows Mobile 5.0, including how the Direct Push technology works, the impact of changing it’s settings, recommended values, and how to configure the device.
The Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) is a software upgrade for Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices that works with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2.
Enterprise customers can use their existing Exchange Server 2003 SP2, reducing the need for additional third-party server products and client access license fees.
To use MSFP successfully, you should understand:
- MSFP Features
- How the Direct Push Technology Works
- Requirements and Best Practices for Using MSFP
- How to Configure the Device

A Better Way to Migrate: The Case for Archiving Before Migrating to Exchange 2007 is a whitepaper written by Devin L. Ganger, Exchange MVP, 3Sharp, LLC.
Learn how to:
- Improve your Exchange 2007 migration planning
- Drastically reduce the amount of time required to migrate
- Improve the stability of Exchange after the migration
- Mitigate risk to your end users
Using a traditional migration strategy presents many potential roadblocks due in part to the increasing amount of data stored in mailboxes. Moving this data from the current messaging system –whether it’s a previous version of Exchange, Novell GroupWise or another SMTP solution– to Exchange 2007 can take a significant amount of time and invite a number of risks.
This white paper discusses those risks in depth, then offers an alternative strategy for addressing them, as well as simplifying your migration: archiving email before you begin. The significant advantages this approach offers will also be explored.
This withepaper is sponsored by Quest and it focus on Quest Archive Manager. You can get it for free here (registration required).

Some time ago, I mentioned 2 eBooks that were available freely from Realtime Publishers. Meanwhile 2 more interesting eBooks have been released:
- The Essentials Series: Messaging and Web Security, by Dan Sullivan, continues the series’ focus on managing IT infrastructure and applications in an increasingly complex security environment. The articles are especially geared towards application developers, database administrators, Web architects, and systems managers, and focus on emerging threats to enterprise as well as SMB environments.
- The Definitive Guide to Successful Deployment of VoIP and IP Telephony, by IP Telephony expert Jim Cavanagh, provides practical insights into the specific steps organizations need to take to be successful with the implementation of VoIP and Internet Protocol Telephony. This book goes beyond the theoretical and provides insights and guidance gleaned from work with some of the largest enterprises, institutions, and agencies around the world. It puts that knowledge into a form that can be put right to work. Written in a clear, concise format for both technical and non-technical professionals alike, this book provides checklists and electronic “Report Cards” that implementers can use to select and deploy the right telephony solutions, applications, services, and testing and monitoring tools for their own specific situations.
