Outstanding spam capture rate and low false positives with GFI MailEssentials’ two anti-spam engines

Version 14 ships with additional anti-spam engine that requires minimal configuration.

London, UK, 18 September 2008 – A new version of the leading anti-spam and anti-phishing software GFI MailEssentials has been released, GFI, an international developer of quality software at unbeatable prices, announced today. Version 14 ships with an additional anti-spam engine that will improve spam capture rates out of the box with minimal configuration. GFI MailEssentials 14 also features a RealTime dashboard and reporting functionality.

With over 60 awards to its name, 80,000 satisfied customers, GFI MailEssentials is an anti-spam filter that captures well over 98% of spam – including the latest CNN and MSNBC spam – but with a very low rate of false positives. GFI MailEssentials can detect and block phishing emails as well as add email management tools to the mail server: disclaimers, mail monitoring, Internet mail reporting, list server, server-based auto replies and POP3 downloading. It also ships at a price that is 35% cheaper than any of GFI’s competitors.

The latest version, GFI MailEssentials 14, ships with SpamRazer, an additional anti-spam engine that provides a second layer of protection and highly effective filtering out-of-the-box. It has been designed to be very simple to use and because it is frequently updated, the latest spam attacks such as NDR spam, CNN spam, MSNBC spam and many more are caught without the need to tweak or train the product.

With SpamRazer filtering, IP reputation filtering, Bayesian and other advanced anti-spam technology modules, an ultra high capture rate is obtained as well as a market-leading low rate of false positives thereby ensuring that good and important emails are not classified as spam. To further improve the overall performance of the Microsoft Exchange Server where GFI MailEssentials is installed, Version 14 hooks into the Exchange Server at the SMTP protocol level. This means that Exchange will not have to download every single email before GFI MailEssentials can reject it as spam. This will save on bandwidth and also boost CPU performance.

Two other new features in GFI MailEssentials 14 include a dashboard to give administrators a visual snapshot of their mail flow and the product’s status. In terms of reporting, GFI MailEssentials 14 allows users (always at the administrator’s discretion) to receive a daily report showing how much email was received for that user and how much of it was caught as spam. The email report will list the emails caught as spam.

“With over 80,000 customers, GFI MailEssentials is the leading anti-spam and anti-phishing server software on the market today. It is the perfect anti-spam solution for small and medium sized businesses because it uses cutting edge technology but ships at the lowest price on the market. Version 14 of this award-winning software is a much-awaited release and we are confident that it caters for the needs of our large customer base and incorporates much of what our clients have requested in terms of features and technology,” David Vella, Director of Product Management at GFI, said. For more information on GFI MailEssentials please visit: http://www.gfi.com/mes. Pricing starts at $207.20 for 10 mailboxes. More pricing options are available at http://www.gfi.com/pricing/pricelist.aspx?product=...ang=en. Exchange Hosted Services at Microsoft

So the writer team I’m part of just finished a new white paper for Microsoft IT Showcase, this time covering the deployment of Exchange Hosted Services (EHS) at Microsoft.

I was partly involved in this writing project, but credits should go to Kay Unkroth :)

“The Microsoft Information Technology (Microsoft IT) group required a reliable and cost-efficient solution to increase protection against spam, viruses, and other messaging threats. Microsoft IT implemented Microsoft® Exchange Hosted Services to meet these needs.”

Go read it here.

A quick look at the free SolarWinds Exchange Monitor dashboard tool.

As I promised you in the July 2008 version of the MSExchange.org newsletter, here is a short review of the SolarWinds Exchange Monitor. I have now been playing with this free little dashboard tool for a couple of months, and here are my experiences with the tool so far.

I installed it on my primary desktop and after specifying things such as the Exchange Server to monitor and an account with the necessary permissions to connect to it, I was pretty much rolling. Exchange Monitor allowed me to continuously monitor my Exchange servers real-time, and yes I mean real-time! I could monitor things such as the critical Exchange services, mail queue sizes, and even the health of the server (CPU, memory consumption and more) on which Exchange has been installed. This makes it a breeze for me to identify and troubleshoot Exchange server problems such as email delays, calendar issues, growing mail queues, transport failures, Internet connection failures and even virus activity on my Exchange server. Below you can see a screenshot of the tool.

ExchangeMonitor2.JPG

As you can see the tool uses built-in red, yellow, and green health indicators, so that it is easy to prevent performance issues in a proactive way, resulting in no impact to the end-users. With Exchange Monitor at my fingertips, I was able to track Exchange health at-a-glance and ensure this mission-critical application did not fail. As an Exchange administrator, you do know how evil the CIO and the end-users can be right?

I can highly recommend you give this neat and free tool a test drive, I am sure you will not go through an uninstall once it is running. What is really cool is that you can access the Exchange Monitor directly from the system tray when you need to. The only drawback is that it only supports Exchange 2000 and 2003, but I would be surprised if Solarwinds did not come up with a version that also supported Exchange 2007.

With that all I can say is “Happy monitoring!”

Taking email archiving to another level with GFI MailArchiver 6

London, UK, 2 September 2008 – A new version of GFI MailArchiver for Exchange, an email management and archiving solution, is being released today. GFI MailArchiver 6 integrates with Microsoft’s Outlook email client to allow users to access their archived email faster and in a more transparent manner. GFI MailArchiver is the first email archiving product to offer integration with Outlook without the use of stub files. This reduces the load on the Exchange Server while greatly reducing client complexity issues and administration.  With Microsoft not recommending the use of stubs in email archiving products, it was an easy decision for GFI not to use stub files as other email archiving vendors are doing and to take an innovative and more effective approach.

GFI MailArchiver is the leading archiving solution for SMBs. Shipping at the lowest price on the market, the software archives all corporate email, reduces dependency on troublesome PST files, permits employees to access old and deleted emails at any time and from any location and helps companies meet eDiscovery and legal compliance requirements.

A first choice product for many small and medium sized businesses, GFI MailArchiver 6 now allows end-users to search and access all their old and deleted emails from a folder in their Outlook email client. Integration with Outlook means that archived email can be assessed from Outlook as if it were their Exchange mailbox or local PST file. GFI MailArchiver users can now enjoy a faster and improved experience than those using stubs.

Many archiving solutions leave a small stub file in place of the archived message that can be used by end users to retrieve archived messages from the archival system however this creates problems for administrators in terms of server performance as small portions of the emails are still left into the Exchange Server store.

“The new version of GFI MailArchiver has been designed to meet the requirements of our clients and to strengthen our position in a market that is growing at a very fast pace as more companies are seeing the importance of email archiving. GFI is the first email archiving vendor to offer integration with Outlook without the need for stub files. We have spent considerable engineering effort to do this and we are confident that this benefit will help us increase market share. With over 10,000 satisfied customers, GFI MailArchiver is fast becoming the email archiving product of choice for SMBs. Retailing at the lowest price on the market yet not compromising on functionality, we are confident that GFI MailArchiver is a sure winner,” David Vella, Director of Product Management at GFI, said.

For businesses around the world, email has become the primary means of communication, yet many still underestimate the need to archive all corporate email correspondence. Research carried out by GFI Software in the UK and US found that 51% and 53% respectively do not use an email archiving solution. Awareness on the importance of email archiving is also somewhat lacking. GFI’s research found that in the UK, 30% of SMBs do not feel they are sufficiently informed about email archiving while 36% of SMBs in the US feel they do not know enough on the subject.

With an email archiving solution like GFI MailArchiver, the problems associated with an organization’s high dependency on email are resolved. By archiving emails in a central database, storage issues on the email server are reduce as will the need to depend on PST files to archive emails. End-users, on the other hand, will find that looking up old or deleted emails is a breeze thanks to Outlook integration and the ability to search the archive using a web-browser – even if they are away from the office.

From a legal or management perspective, GFI MailArchiver ensures that all corporate emails are stored safely, are tamper proof and they are accessible within minutes making it easier for that company to provide the necessary data and also defend itself in a court of a law or prove it is compliant with the regulations in that country. With GFI MailArchiver, management can also keep tabs on employee’s emails if individuals are suspected of using company email abusively or with malicious intent.

Case study: Quantum Marine Engineering uses GFI MailArchiver to resolve customer complaint and avoid legal repercussions. Read the full case study here.

More pricing options are available at http://www.gfi.com/pricing/pricelist.aspx?product=...ang=en. To order, customers may use either the online order form or via one of GFI’s authorized distributors and resellers.
